$2.95 million government breast reconstruction funding gives benefit to breast cancer survivors

A new $2.95 million Brumby Labor Government grant is helping Victorian researchers collaborate to find an alternative to silicon in breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings said the project was important in the treatment and recovery of women with breast cancer.

Bernard O’Brien Institute to create Australia’s first Stem Cell Bank

The Bernard O’Brien Institute (BOBI) in Melbourne today announced the establishment of Australia’s first Stem Cell Bank.

The bank will create, source, store and distribute adult tissue-derived stem cells for laboratory and clinical research throughout Australia and overseas. The bank will also supply newly-developed stem cells, known as iPS cells, which have the potential to be as useful as embryonic stem cells without the ethical issues.

Dusting to give keynote address at TERMIS

8 July 2008 

A senior scientist at the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery will give a keynote address at a major international conference in Taiwan later this year. Professor Greg Dusting will speak at the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine international society (TERMIS) conference at the Chien-Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center in Taipei from November 6 to 8.

Natural breast regrowth a step closer

The prospect of breast cancer patients being able to regrow their breasts after surgery is a step closer because of research at the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery. So far, reconstructive treatment after surgery or trauma has involved transplanting tissue from other parts of the body or using prosthetics or implants.
