Microsurgery is one of the few medical areas in which Australia is a world leader. The steady flow of funds from the Microsurgery Foundation in Melbourne to the Bernard O'Brien Institute over the years is one of the reasons for this pre-eminence.
The Microsurgery Foundation is a charitable, voluntary non-profit organisation administered by a board, currently chaired by Mr Ronald Walker AC, CBE.
The main aim is to raise Funds for research, equipment and building infrastructure for the BOBIM.
Only with the help of funds raised by the Microsurgery Foundation can the Institute maintain its international leadership and continue to advance microsurgical knowledge through hard, unglamorous lab work and clinical programmes.
DIRECTOR: Prof. WAYNE MORRISON
The Microsurgery Foundation is indeed fortunate in having Professor Wayne Morrison AM, MD, BS FRACS as Director. Professor Morrison says:
"Our Research aims at BOBIM are to develop new techniques to restore normality to people who have suffered deformity or loss of function. This predominantly occurs as a result of injury, cancer removal, burns or congenital deformity. Much of the research we undertake has immediate and practical application to patients. Although we find our research and clinical work absorbing and at times consuming, we never overlook our ultimate aim of restoring hope, confidence, identity and personal fulfillment to our patients. It's a sad fact that society does not react well to people with disfigurement and disability. This is the true worth of our work."
