Fellows at the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery
The training offered at the BOBIM has an international reputation for excellence. The Institute is the world's largest centre for microsurgery training. Research Fellows from overseas and Australia form the backbone of our training program. Since 1970, more than 200 surgeons from over 30 countries have been trained in the principles of reconstructive microsurgery at BOBIM and have been involved in ground breaking research projects.
The Fellowship, is predominantly laboratory based research position: ~85% research and ~15% clinical. Fellows are assigned a research project following consultation with Professor Morrison and the Director of Research. Clinical activities are undertaken at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Regrettably we can only accept a small number of those who apply. Each Fellow undertakes one or more years of training and upon completion gains a certificate in Microsurgery and Hand Surgery.
General enquiries on our Fellowship scheme may be directed to Jenny Knowlson.
For specific enquiries on research projects, please contact the senior scientist heading the project.

Students at the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery
The Institute has committed itself to providing quality training in basic scientific research and microsurgery to students at a number of levels (Honours, B.Med.Sci, MD, M.Sc. and Ph.D) and this forms an integral part of our core activities. Students must enrol at a university, generally, The University of Melbourne, and with guidance from their prospective supervisor can choose a project in a broad field of tissue engineering or prostate cancer.
Students are encouraged to attend weekly seminars held by other research groups on the St. Vincent’s Hospital campus (eg. St. Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research, University of Melbourne Department of Medicine) and the Institute has active collaborations with many of these organisations.
The Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery has hosted scholars from all over the world and from within Australia and welcomes enquiries from prospective students. Please view our current research projects and then contact the appropriate senior scientist on the project.
General enquiries may be directed to Jenny Knowlson.
